About us

At the From Streets to Homes Association, we believe that everyone deserves a place they can call home. Safe housing is a fundamental condition for a life with dignity. That is why we develop and run model programs that provide independent housing for homeless and vulnerable people — those affected by the housing crisis, for whom there are currently no real solutions.

In our housing programs, we support a wide range of people, including: people experiencing homelessness and living on the streets, mothers moving out of shelters young adults leaving state care, refugees arriving from Ukraine and other countries and, through our partnerships with trade unions, tenants in service housing such as social workers and nursery staff

Our organisation has been operating for nearly 15 years. Over this time, we have supported more than 1,000 people, and currently more than 250 individuals live in our programs as tenants or as recipients of rent support.

Beyond supporting our clients directly, we also aim to change public attitudes toward homelessness and poverty. To achieve this, we go beyond our own programs by: holding workshops in schools and companies, building partnerships with local governments, developing policy recommendations and engaging with both community and traditional media Through this work, we aim to shape public discourse and increase our impact.

In our work, we also rely on our tenants as experts by experience, whose personal stories often play a key role in raising awareness. We are equally grateful for the dozens of volunteers who support us each year with their time, skills, and dedication.

We are committed to the Housing First approach, which is based on the idea that people should not be treated as “homeless” — rather, homelessness itself should be ended. This means that safe, dignified housing is not the end goal of social work, but its starting point. Since December 2025, we have been the first and only Hungarian member of the Housing First Europe Hub, a network working to develop and promote this approach across Europe.

Our organisation also works with a strong focus on women. Across all our activities, we pay special attention to the specific needs of our female clients. We apply trauma-informed approaches in our casework, our social workers participate in specialised training, and we provide both individual and community-based services for women.
