AHA Budapest
Affordable Housing for All – Housing for Everyone at an Affordable Price
Innovation against the housing crisis
AHA Budapest – Affordable Housing for All
AHA Budapest (EUI01-115 AHA Budapest) is a European Union-funded project launched in 2024, aiming to address the housing crisis in the capital through integrated and comprehensive solutions. The project is implemented by eight consortium partners under the leadership of the Municipality of Budapest.
The From Streets to Homes Association plays a key role in representing and promoting social and housing policy perspectives within the project. Our main responsibilities include developing and testing housing services, applying participatory methodologies in planning and construction processes, and supporting the development of several municipal tenant communities in Budapest.
Integrated and comprehensive solutions
Main objectives of the project
- Expanding the municipal social housing stock by converting an unused school building in Újpest, with construction works starting in January 2026
- Developing and launching a unified methodology for an Early Warning System within the social service network to prevent housing loss
- Establishing the Metropolitan Housing Office, where professionals provide support to people affected by the housing crisis
- Testing innovative and flexible housing models to expand access to affordable housing and reduce the burden on energy-poor households
- Developing new models to expand the affordable rental housing sector, building on existing European best practices
Counselling and social support for tenants and people in crisis
Metropolitan Housing Office
One of the most important milestones of the project so far was the opening of the Metropolitan Housing Office in February 2025. Its primary target group consists of tenants living in properties owned by the Municipality of Budapest, but it also provides support to other residents of Budapest affected by housing crises.
Currently, the Office offers counselling, intensive social work, and energy efficiency advice. In later phases of the project, the range of services will be expanded to include additional support measures under development, such as housing emergency assistance and access to flexible housing solutions.
Since its opening, the Office has already supported several hundred clients.
Flexible housing – a solution that benefits everyone
Reliable room rental
Another major outcome of our service development work is the launch of the Together, Easier – Reliable Room Rental Between Older and Younger People program in February 2026, which expands the services available through the Metropolitan Housing Office.
The program offers a safe and affordable room rental model in which elderly homeowners rent out a room in their home to young people at below-market rates. The process is supported through pre-move preparation, structured contractual frameworks, ongoing professional support, and mediation services when needed.
