Community Programs

We run thematic peer support groups and a labour market integration group, and we organise community events for our clients and staff. These groups and events provide a safe space for connection and for developing social skills, complementing individual casework.

Women’s Focus

We pay special attention to the specific needs of our female clients and provide them with a safe and supportive community. In a supportive, non-judgmental environment, participants can share their challenges, receive support from one another, and strengthen their self-esteem and ability to advocate for themselves.

Give Work! Program

Our Give Work! program, running for 9 years, is a community-based labour market reintegration initiative where we build trust on both the employee and employer sides and help them find each other. Within our inclusive community of peer supporters, we assist participants both in finding employment and in maintaining their jobs.

Peer Mentoring Program

Our peer mentors are clients who use their own lived and processed life experiences as a resource to support others. Our experience shows that combining social work with peer mentoring allows us to provide more comprehensive support to our clients.

Moving-in group

We launched our moving-in group in 2023 for those who are moving from shacks into apartments during the given year. Although moving into independent housing is a positive life event, it also brings major changes that can be difficult to cope with, such as a new environment, new neighbours, increased responsibilities, new routines, and changing relationship dynamics.

During the monthly sessions, we develop the knowledge and skills necessary for maintaining independent housing, while also learning about the systemic causes of social inequalities. This year, the group’s focus has expanded to include optimal housing and energy use, supported by our technical colleague. Topics are explored through interactive exercises and by sharing personal experiences.

Another important goal of the group is to ensure that participants do not feel alone in their new life situation, but instead have a supportive space where they can turn to others, share their experiences, and express their feelings.

Community events for clients fleeing Ukraine

We regularly organise community events for our clients who have fled from Ukraine. These occasions offer opportunities to relax, build and deepen peer relationships, and share both challenges and joys in a safe environment. These gatherings often lead to long-term friendships, which are especially valuable, as one of the greatest challenges for refugees in Hungary is the lack of social connections.

Outdoor cooking events

Each year, we organise our traditional autumn outdoor cooking event, where both our staff and clients participate in large numbers. Cooking together brings people closer, and these occasions create new connections for clients who may otherwise feel isolated, while also strengthening the entire ULE community.

Christmas

Every year, we organise a Christmas dinner for all our tenants. As we currently work with many families, we found it more practical to organise three separate events for different groups: participants of the From Shacks to Homes program and the Give Work! group, our Social Rental Agency and Transcarpathian clients, and our Ukrainian-speaking clients.
